ኢትዮጵያን ከሁለት አስርተ ዓመታት በላይ እየገዛ ያለው ኢህአዴግ የሃይማኖት ተቋማትንና ምዕመናኑን በጥብቅ የሚቆጣጠርበትን ህግ ለማጽደቅ በዝግጅት ላይ መሆኑ ተሰማ። የህጉ ረቂቅ የደረሳቸው ከፍተኛ ዲፕሎማቶች ኢህአዴግን አበክረው እየመከሩና በሚያመጣው አጠቃላይ መዘዝ ዙሪያ እያስጠነቀቁ ነው።

ጎልጉል ከዲፕሎማት ምንጮቹ ባገኘው መረጃ መሰረት ኢህአዴግ በእምነት ተቋማት ላይ ቁጥጥሩን የሚያጠብቅበትንና ከሃይማኖት ተቋማት ቅጥር ግቢ ውጭ መሰብሰብን፣ ሰላማዊ ሰልፍ ማድረግንና የተቃውሞ ድምጽ ማሰማትን የሚከለክል ህግ አዘጋጅቷል።

የዜናው ምንጮች ዝርዝር ህጉን ለጊዜው ይፋ ከማድረግ እንደሚቆጠቡ አስታውቀዋል። ይሁን እንጂ የሚደነገገውን አዲስ ህግ ጥሰዋል በሚል የሚከሰሱ ምዕመኖች እስከ እድሜ ልክ በሚደርስ እስራት እንዲቀጡ የሚያዝ አንቀጽ አለበት። አዲሱ ህግ ከሽብርተኞች ህግ ጋር የሚጣቀስ እንደሆነም የጠቆሙት ክፍሎች ኢህአዴግ “ከእምነት ነጻነት” ጥያቄ ጋር በተያያዘና በኦርቶዶክስ እምነት ተከታዮች ዘንድ ውስጥ ውስጡን እየነደደ ያለው ችግር ስላስጨነቀው ይህንን ህግ ለማውጣት መገደዱን አስረድተዋል። በሌላ በኩልም እስካሁን መፍትሔ ያላገኘው የሙስሊሞች ጥያቄ ከዚያም ጋር ተከትሎ የተከሰተው ደም መፋሰስ ወደፊት ሊያመጣ በሚችለው ጉዳይ ላይ ኢህአዴግን በብርቱ አሳስቦታል፡፡

ኢህአዴግ ከቀን ወደ ቀን ቀውስ እየተደራረበት እንደሆነ የተረዳችው አሜሪካ በከፍተኛ ባለስልጣኖቿ አማካይነት ኢህአዴግን እየመከረች እንደሆነ ከዲፕሎማቶች የተገኘው መረጃ ያመለክታል። ከፖለቲካው ቀውስና በቀጠናው ካለው አለመረጋጋት ጋር በተያያዘ አሜሪካ በተደጋጋሚ የህወሃትን ሰዎች በተናጠል እያነጋገረች እንደሆነም ለማወቅ ተችሏል። ዲፕሎማቶቹ እንደሚሉት አሜሪካ መለስ “ከተሰዉ” በኋላ አገሪቱን ማን እየመራት እንደሆነ በቅጡ ለመረዳት በሚያስቸግር ሁኔታ የስልጣን መዛነፍና ደረጃን የጠበቀ የስልጣን ተዋረድ አለመኖሩም አሳስቧታል። ኢህአዴግ ለህልውናዬ ያሰጋኛል በሚል መንግሥታዊ ባልሆኑ ግብረ ሰናይ ድርጅቶች /መያዶች/ ላይ ያወጣውን አፋኝ ህግም ጠቅሰዋል። ዲፕሎማቶቹ በጉዳዩ ዙሪያ ዝርዝር መረጃ ለመስጠት ወቅቱ አሁን እንዳልሆነ አመልክተዋል።

Hundreds of children, farmers detained in Mera’wi, Northern Ethiopia

ESAT News

At least 300 farmers, children, women and youth that have that opposed government’s plan of extracting underground water for floriculture in the Western Gojjam Zone of Mecha Woreda and Enashenefalen Kebele of Chboche area, have been detained Mera’wi city and Durbete prisons.

Members of the Federal Police have used excessive and brute force on farmers that have damaged the extracting machines. The area is still surrounded by police and many youth have been fled the area.

Semachew Minchel, Chairman of the opposition AEUP branch, said although the people have voiced their opposition at an earlier date, the government went on with its project discarding the people’s protest.

Semachew said he visited priso ns and the condition of the prisoners was lamentable.

It is to be recalled that ESAT had reported that several farmers had been arrested in the area on a similar case.

ESAT’s calls to speak with the officials of the Woreda have not been responded.

ደቡብ ሱዳን በህወሃት ሙለ ቁጥጥርና ፈቃድ የምትንቀሳቀስ አገር መሆኗን እያወቁ ወደዛ ማቅናታቸውን ባሥልጣኑ
“ታሊቅ ጥፋት” ብሇውታል። ቤተሰቦቻቸውን ሇማግኘት ያደረግነው ሙከራ አልተሳካም። በቅርቡ አቶ ኦሞት ኦባንግ
መኮብሇሊቸውና በብዙዎች ዘንድ አውሮጳ እንዳለ ቢነገርም በትክክል ያለበት አገር በይፋ አሇመታወቁን መዘገባችን
ይታወሳል።

TPLF regime records phone calls

NAIROBI, KENYA –  A rights group says that Ethiopia’s government regularly listens to and records the phone calls of opposition activists and journalists using equipment provided by foreign technology companies.

Human Rights Watch said in a report Friday that the foreign equipment aids the Ethiopian government’s surveillance of perceived political opponents inside and outside the country.

The group’s Arvind Ganesan said Ethiopia is using its government-controlled telecom system to silence dissenters. The group says that recorded phone calls with family and friends are often played during abusive interrogations.

Human Rights Watch said most of the monitoring technology is provided by the Chinese firm ZTE. Several European companies have also provided equipment, the group said, including from the U.K., Germany and Italy.

Ethiopia will be a country to run to

I appreciate the contribution Professor Minga Negash and Professor Seid Hassan made on the 3rd conference of the Center for Rights of Ethiopian Women (CREW) in Silver Spring, MD last week. They shared with us their study why Ethiopians both educated and uneducated old and young have left Ethiopia in the last two decades in large numbers. The analysis is good for policy makers and politicians.

As you all know very well the regime in power in Ethiopia for more than two decades is calling itself “YeLemate Mengiste” and “You are free to go out of Ethiopia”. “Freedom” to go out of Ethiopia for our young sisters turned out to be sweating as house slaves in Gulf Nations. Death, beating, rape, jailing and deportation has become common.

The third CREW gathering last week focused on the suffering of our women and I wonder if Professor Minga Negashe and Seid Hassan’s work have contributed to that burning issue of our sisters. Someone has to do the translation and share it with our sisters suffering as housemaids in the Gulf Nations at this very moment.

Yes Ethiopians young both men and women are running away for better life or for freedom. Middle Eastern airlines and houses are filled by skilled and unskilled Ethiopians respectively. Our famous athletes make huge money on Arabian lands.

However, we have not seen the well established Ethiopians in these countries and our top athletes saying a word about the suffering of our sisters they witnessed closely. The Arab medias attack of Ethiopians as dangerous people never was challenged by capable Ethiopians out of fear of loosing their jobs and big pay.

Most of our “educated” out of Ethiopia live in fear too. I have not seen from your piece the urgency of our sisters situations in Gulf Nations. Diaspora Ethiopians took it as urgent issue and mobilized to save lives. We know Diaspora is divided. But we have proven to anti Ethiopians that we will not take too much humiliations. Zeraye Deresse did not take it neither Moges Asgedom nor Abraha Deboche.

Leaving our homeland in search of freedom or better life have not taken our connection with Ethiopia and Ethiopians. The reaction in Saudi Arabia to the barbarism against Ethiopians by Ethiopians there, “Oromo, Tigre, Amhara, Gurage, etc, Christian or Muslims, we are one cry” and the hundreds thousands rally in support of our people in major cities of the world make me proud to be an Ethiopian.

I am very certain that Ethiopia will attract her children back home when the “Federal” bantustaization wall is dissolved and we all use Ethiopia’s land and resources for the benefit our people equally. The bottom line is establishing government for the people by the people.

Despite the claim of TPLF that the federal system has equally protected the rights of ‘nations and nationalities’, the political and economic power is fundamentally controlled by Tigayans who use the cultural differences in the country to their divide and rule strategy.  In the past, Ghinbot 7 and Esat Television were exposing the Tigrean monopoly of almost all positions in the Ministry of Defence, security apparatus and foreign diplomatic missions. Exposing the people who are in control of real power in the country helps to increase the awareness of the public about the nature of the apartheid like regime in Ethiopia. Ghnbot 7 and Esat as well as other democratic organizations need to continue working on this important issue. One of the federal institutions that are entirely controlled by the Tigay elites is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Among the top fifteen departments of the ministry, Tigreans control at least eight of them. Does it mean that there are no Ethiopians from other ethnic groups who can carry out such responsibilities? Where is the diversity that TPLF cries day and night?

Ethiopia uses foreign kit to spy on opponents – HRW

Ethiopia’s government is using imported technology to spy on the phones and computers of its perceived opponents, a Human Rights Watch report says.

The New York-based rights group accuses the government of trying to silence dissent, using software and kit sold by European and Chinese firms.

The report says the firms may be guilty of colluding in oppression.

An Ethiopian government spokesman, quoted by AFP, dismissed the report as a part of a smear campaign.

“There is nothing new to respond to,” Ethiopian Information Minister Redwan Hussein told the agency.

Human Rights Watch (HRW) says its report is based on more than 100 interviews with victims of abuses and former intelligence officials, conducted between September 2012 and February this year.

Rights groups frequently accuse the Ethiopian government of cracking down on opposition activists and journalists.

The government denies the claims.

‘Overseas surveillance’

All phone and internet connections in Ethiopia are provided by a state-owned company. According to HRW, this has given the government unchecked power to monitor communications.

“Security officials have virtually unlimited access to the call records of all telephone users in Ethiopia,” the report said. “They regularly and easily record phone calls without any legal process or oversight.”

Recorded conversations are also alleged to have featured in abusive interrogations of suspected dissidents.

The technology used by to monitor the communications is said to have been provided by companies based in China, the UK, Italy and Germany.

“The foreign firms that are providing products and services that facilitate Ethiopia’s illegal surveillance are risking complicity in rights abuses,” HRW’s business and human rights director, Arvind Ganesan, said.

According to the report, the government has extended its surveillance to Ethiopians living overseas.

Ethiopians living in the UK and the US have accused the authorities in Addis Ababa of planting spy software on their computers.

Both countries have been urged to investigate the claims, on the grounds that they may have violated domestic laws against invasions of privacy.

HRW says the firms that sell surveillance technology to governments also have a duty to ensure that their products are not helping to suppress human rights.

“The makers of these tools should take immediate steps to address their misuse,” Mr Ganesan said.
