Tension in Gambella

ESAT News

There has been a huge tension of conflict in the Gambella region of Ethiopia, ESAT’s reporter in the region said.
The region has been under police occupation following the killing of a driver and a police officer at Wanke Road, where the Ethiopian Roads Authority is building near the South Sudan border. The Regional police states that the killers are “terrorists that sneaked in from Eritrea.”
In another place in Gambella known as Fenjo, another lorry driver and an unidentified person have been killed and the identity of the killer has not yet been known. In a military shooting in Gambella city few days ago, a Federal police member was killed.
Members of the Ethiopian National Defense Force and another squad known as Special Force have been deployed near the South Sudanese border. Gambella has become restive, the sound of gunshot is often heard, our reporter said.
South Sudanese refugees have been migrating to Ethiopia. The former president of the Gambella region, who was detained in South Sudan, has been recently repatriated to Ethiopia.
ESAT’s effort to speak with Region’s Police has not been successful due to mobile network outages in the region.
